What is Testicular Cancer?

Testicular cancer is a type of cancer that originates in the testicles, which are part of the male reproductive system. The testicles are responsible for producing sperm and the hormone testosterone. This type of cancer is relatively rare but is the most common cancer in young men aged 15 to 35.

Types of Testicular Cancer

There are primarily two types of testicular cancer: seminomas and non-seminomas. Seminomas grow more slowly and respond well to radiation therapy. Non-seminomas tend to grow more quickly and include several different subtypes such as embryonal carcinoma, yolk sac carcinoma, choriocarcinoma, and teratoma.

Risk Factors

Several risk factors can increase the likelihood of developing testicular cancer:
Undescended testicle (cryptorchidism)
Family history of testicular cancer
HIV infection
Previous history of testicular cancer
Age (most common in men aged 15-35)
Race (more common in white men than in men of other races)
