Cells undergo numerous divisions throughout an individual's lifetime. During each division, DNA is copied, and sometimes copying errors, known as random mutations, occur. While most of these mutations are harmless, some can affect genes that control cell growth and division, like oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes. When these critical genes are mutated, it can lead to uncontrolled cell proliferation and cancer.
