The process begins with the extraction of T cells from the patientâs blood. These T cells are then genetically modified in the laboratory to express CARs on their surface. CARs are engineered receptors that give T cells the new ability to target a specific protein found on cancer cells. Once modified, the CAR T cells are multiplied and infused back into the patientâs body, where they seek out and destroy cancer cells.
