Radiation can cause cancer by damaging the DNA in cells. When ionizing radiation passes through the body, it can knock electrons out of atoms in the cells, creating ions and free radicals. These highly reactive molecules can then damage the DNA and other critical cellular components. If the damage is not properly repaired, it can lead to mutations. Accumulation of such mutations over time can result in uncontrolled cell growth and the formation of tumors.
