Vismodegib works by inhibiting the Hedgehog signaling pathway, which is critical in cell differentiation and proliferation. Abnormal activation of this pathway is implicated in the development of BCC. By blocking the Smoothened protein, a component of the pathway, vismodegib prevents the growth and survival of cancer cells.
