The procedure is typically performed on an outpatient basis. Patients are usually given a sedative to help them relax, and their throat may be numbed with a local anesthetic. The gastroscope is then gently inserted through the mouth and passed down the throat into the esophagus, stomach, and duodenum. The procedure usually takes about 15-30 minutes.
