Certain cancer treatments, such as radiation therapy, particularly in the head and neck area, can damage the thyroid gland leading to hypothyroidism. Moreover, some drugs used in chemotherapy can also induce hypothyroidism. Additionally, primary thyroid cancer can directly cause hypothyroidism if the cancerous growth affects hormone production.
