Recent studies suggest that some species of Streptococcus may play a role in both the development and progression of certain types of cancer. For instance, chronic infections with Streptococcus bovis have been associated with colorectal cancer. The hypothesis is that chronic inflammation caused by persistent infection may create an environment conducive to carcinogenesis.
