Apoptotic pathways are a series of biochemical events leading to characteristic cell changes and death. These pathways are broadly categorized into two main types: the intrinsic (or mitochondrial) pathway and the extrinsic (or death receptor) pathway. Both pathways ultimately activate caspases, a family of protease enzymes that orchestrate the cell's demolition.
