Cancer vaccines are designed to prevent or treat cancer by stimulating the immune system. Preventive vaccines, like the HPV vaccine, have significantly reduced the incidence of cervical and other HPV-related cancers. Therapeutic vaccines, which treat existing cancers, are also making strides. For example, the FDA-approved sipuleucel-T vaccine for prostate cancer uses a patientâs own immune cells to target the cancer. Research is ongoing to develop vaccines for other types of cancer, including melanoma and glioblastoma.
