What Are the Challenges in Telomere-Targeted Cancer Therapies?
Despite the potential of telomere-targeted therapies, several challenges remain. Cancer cells can develop resistance to telomerase inhibitors through various mechanisms, including activation of ALT pathways. Moreover, targeting telomerase in normal stem cells could lead to adverse effects on tissue regeneration and repair. Therefore, achieving selective targeting of cancer cells while sparing normal cells is a critical focus of ongoing research.
