What are the potential oral complications from cancer treatments?

Cancer treatments can cause a variety of oral complications. Chemotherapy may result in mucositis, a painful inflammation and ulceration of the mucous membranes lining the mouth. Radiation therapy to the head and neck can lead to dry mouth (xerostomia), making it difficult to speak, chew, and swallow. Other oral complications include infections, bleeding, and a higher risk of tooth decay and gum disease.
