Infections are a common complication in cancer patients due to a weakened immune system. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy can reduce the number of white blood cells, particularly neutrophils, a condition known as neutropenia. Surgery, the presence of catheters, and certain cancers that affect the bone marrow also increase the risk of infection.
