Schwannomatosis is caused by mutations in the SMARCB1 or LZTR1 genes. These genes are involved in the regulation of cell growth and tumor suppression. When these genes are mutated, cells can grow uncontrollably and form tumors. Unlike NF1 and NF2, which are inherited in an autosomal dominant pattern, schwannomatosis can occur sporadically or be inherited.
