During the procedure, the patient lies on an X-ray table, and a small tube is inserted into the rectum to introduce the barium sulfate. Air may also be introduced to expand the colon and improve image clarity. The patient will be asked to change positions several times to allow the barium to coat the entire colon. X-ray images are then taken from various angles.
