What is the Role of M1 Macrophages in the Tumor Microenvironment?
In the tumor microenvironment (TME), M1 macrophages exert anti-tumor effects by producing pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines that inhibit tumor growth and metastasis. They also enhance the recruitment of other immune cells, such as cytotoxic T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells, which further contribute to the destruction of tumor cells. However, the TME is often immunosuppressive, and the presence of M2 macrophages can counteract the beneficial effects of M1 macrophages.
