Drug transporters, such as P-glycoprotein and other ATP-binding cassette (ABC) transporters, play a crucial role in maintaining BBB integrity by actively effluxing drugs back into the bloodstream. These transporters can limit the effectiveness of chemotherapy by preventing adequate drug accumulation in the brain. Understanding and potentially inhibiting these transporters is an area of active research to improve drug delivery in CNS cancers.
