Tumor suppressor kinases, in contrast to oncogenic kinases, normally function to inhibit cell growth and promote apoptosis (programmed cell death). When these kinases are inactivated due to mutations or deletions, cells can grow uncontrollably. The LKB1 kinase is an example of a tumor suppressor that, when mutated, can lead to Peutz-Jeghers syndrome and increased cancer risk.
