Certain cancers, such as leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma, adversely affect the bone marrow, where blood cells are produced. High doses of chemotherapy or radiation therapy can also damage the bone marrow. Transplantation allows doctors to use higher doses of therapy to treat cancer more effectively while subsequently restoring the patient’s bone marrow functionality.
