Are There Any Challenges in Targeting Cancer Cell Receptors?
While targeting cancer cell receptors has shown great promise, there are several challenges:
Resistance - Cancer cells can develop resistance to receptor-targeted therapies over time, leading to treatment failure. Heterogeneity - Tumors are often heterogeneous, meaning they contain a mixture of cells with different characteristics, including receptor expression. This makes it difficult to target all cancer cells effectively. Side Effects - Targeted therapies can also affect normal cells that express the same receptors as cancer cells, leading to adverse side effects.
