Can pH Modulation Be a Therapeutic Strategy?

Targeting the acidic microenvironment of tumors is an area of active research. Strategies such as using buffering agents to neutralize acidity, or drugs that exploit the acidic conditions to selectively target cancer cells, are being studied. Bicarbonate therapy and proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are examples of approaches that aim to modify the tumor pH to hinder cancer growth and enhance the efficacy of other treatments. However, these therapies are still under investigation and have not yet become standard clinical practice.
