MHC Class I molecules bind to peptides derived from endogenous proteins and present them on the cell surface. If these peptides are recognized as non-self by T cell receptors on CD8+ T cells, an immune response is triggered. This response typically results in the destruction of the presenting cell, thereby eliminating potential threats such as infected or cancerous cells.
