How Do Oncogenes and Tumor Suppressors Affect Cancer?
Oncogenes are genes that, when mutated or overexpressed, promote the uncontrolled growth of cells, leading to cancer. Examples include Ras and Myc. Tumor suppressors, on the other hand, are genes that normally inhibit cell division or induce apoptosis. When these genes are inactivated or deleted, cancer can develop. Notable examples are p53 and RB (Retinoblastoma).
