Platelets are responsible for blood clotting. Cancer patients may experience low platelet counts, a condition known as thrombocytopenia. This can lead to increased bleeding and bruising. Thrombocytopenia can be caused by the cancer itself, particularly in cancers that affect the bone marrow, or as a side effect of treatments like chemotherapy.
