As cells accumulate genetic mutations, they may begin to grow and divide abnormally, forming a mass of tissue called a tumor. Tumors can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). Malignant tumors have the ability to invade surrounding tissues and spread to other parts of the body through a process known as metastasis. This spread makes cancer particularly dangerous and challenging to treat.
