What Role Do Genes Play in Cancer?

Genes play a critical role in the development of cancer. Oncogenes are mutated forms of normal genes (proto-oncogenes) that promote cell growth and division. When these genes become overactive, they can drive the uncontrolled growth of cells. Conversely, tumor suppressor genes normally inhibit cell division and promote apoptosis (programmed cell death). Mutations that inactivate these genes can also contribute to cancer development.
