The procedure varies depending on the type of biopsy:
- Needle Biopsy: A local anesthetic is applied to numb the area. A needle is then inserted to extract tissue or fluid. - Incisional/Excisional Biopsy: Usually requires local or general anesthesia. A surgical incision is made to remove part or all of the suspicious area. - Endoscopic Biopsy: Performed under sedation. An endoscope is inserted through a natural opening (such as the mouth or rectum) to access internal tissues. - Skin Biopsy: Local anesthetic is applied before a small piece of skin is removed using a scalpel or punch tool.
