Beta hCG levels can be elevated in a variety of cancers, most notably germ cell tumors, which include testicular and ovarian cancers. Elevated levels can also be seen in other malignancies such as choriocarcinoma, a rare cancer of the placenta, and certain types of stomach and lung cancers.
