Mutations in the BRCA1 gene impede its ability to repair DNA damage, leading to genetic instability. This instability can result in the accumulation of additional genetic mutations, which may eventually lead to the development of cancer. Women with a BRCA1 mutation have a significantly increased risk of developing breast and ovarian cancers compared to those without the mutation.
