endoplasmic reticulum

How is the ER Related to Cancer?

In the context of cancer, the ER is significant because it is involved in the production and folding of proteins that cells need to grow and divide. Cancer cells often have high levels of protein synthesis and secretion, which puts stress on the ER, leading to a condition known as ER stress. This stress can activate the unfolded protein response (UPR), a cellular mechanism aimed at restoring normal function of the ER.
