ROS are produced endogenously in the body through several mechanisms. The mitochondrial electron transport chain is a significant source, where leakage of electrons can reduce oxygen to form superoxide. Other sources include peroxisomes, cytochrome P450 enzymes, and inflammatory cells. Exogenous sources include environmental factors such as ultraviolet (UV) radiation, tobacco smoke, pollution, and radiation therapy.
