The exact cause of acoustic neuroma is not entirely understood. However, most cases are sporadic, meaning they occur randomly. A small percentage of cases are associated with a genetic disorder called neurofibromatosis type II (NF2). This condition is characterized by the growth of noncancerous tumors in the nervous system.
