An acoustic neuroma, also known as vestibular schwannoma, is a non-cancerous (benign) tumor that develops on the eighth cranial nerve. This nerve, also referred to as the vestibulocochlear nerve, is responsible for transmitting sound and balance information from the inner ear to the brain.
