The primary cause of CIN is persistent infection with high-risk types of the Human Papillomavirus (HPV). HPV is a common sexually transmitted infection, and while most HPV infections resolve on their own, certain high-risk strains can lead to the development of CIN and, if untreated, progress to cervical cancer.
