Results from APC testing can be classified into several categories:
Positive: A mutation in the APC gene is identified, confirming a diagnosis of FAP or a related condition. This indicates an increased risk for colorectal cancer and other associated malignancies. Negative: No mutation is found in the APC gene, suggesting a lower likelihood of FAP. However, it does not entirely eliminate the risk of colorectal cancer, particularly if there is a strong family history. Variant of Uncertain Significance (VUS): A genetic change is identified, but its impact on cancer risk is not well understood. Further research and family studies may be required to clarify its significance.
