A pelvic examination typically involves three main components:
1. Visual Examination: The healthcare provider visually inspects the external genitalia for any abnormalities such as lesions, swelling, or discoloration. 2. Speculum Examination: A speculum is inserted into the vagina to allow the healthcare provider to view the cervix and vaginal walls. During this phase, a Pap smear may be conducted to collect cells from the cervix for cancer screening. 3. Bimanual Examination: The provider inserts two fingers into the vagina while pressing down on the abdomen with the other hand to feel the size, shape, and position of the ovaries and uterus.
