During an endoscopy, the patient is often sedated. The endoscope is then carefully inserted into the body through the mouth, anus, or a small incision, depending on the area being examined. The camera on the endoscope transmits images to a monitor, allowing the physician to investigate and, if necessary, take tissue samples.
