Allosteric regulation is a fundamental mechanism by which enzymes and other proteins are regulated in the cell. Unlike competitive inhibition where inhibitors bind to the active site, allosteric regulators bind to a site other than the active site, known as the allosteric site. This binding induces a conformational change in the enzyme, either enhancing or inhibiting its activity.
