An open colectomy is a surgical procedure in which a portion of the colon is removed. This procedure is often performed to treat various types of colon cancer. The surgeon makes a large incision in the abdomen to access the colon, as opposed to a laparoscopic colectomy, which involves smaller incisions and the use of a camera.
