Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) is a member of the herpesvirus family and one of the most common viruses in humans. Most people get infected with EBV during their lifetime, and it often causes infectious mononucleosis (also known as mono or the "kissing disease"). While many individuals recover without severe complications, EBV has been implicated in the development of several types of cancer.
