Esophageal cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the esophagus, the long hollow tube that runs from your throat to your stomach. The esophagus helps move food from the back of your throat to your stomach for digestion. Esophageal cancer usually begins in the cells that line the inside of the esophagus. It can occur at any point along the esophagus but is most often found in the lower portion.
