Msh2 (MutS homolog 2) is a gene that encodes a protein essential for the MMR system. This system is responsible for identifying and repairing erroneous insertions, deletions, and misincorporation of bases that can occur during DNA replication. Msh2 forms a heterodimer with either Msh6 or Msh3, creating the MutSα and MutSβ complexes, respectively, which recognize and initiate repair of mismatched base pairs.
