Recurrent cancer refers to cancer that has returned after a period of remission. This can happen weeks, months, or even years after the initial treatment. Recurrence can occur in the same place as the original tumor (local recurrence), nearby (regional recurrence), or in a different part of the body (distant recurrence or metastasis).
