What is the ALT Pathway?
The
Alternative Lengthening of Telomeres (ALT)
pathway is a telomere maintenance mechanism that some cancer cells use to maintain their
telomere length
without the enzyme
telomerase
. Telomeres are the protective caps at the ends of chromosomes, and their maintenance is crucial for
cell division
and
genomic stability
. In the absence of telomere maintenance, cells would eventually reach a state called
replicative senescence
due to critically short telomeres.
