What is the Link Between Hemochromatosis and Cancer?
Hemochromatosis has been linked to an increased risk of certain types of cancer, particularly liver cancer (hepatocellular carcinoma). The excess iron in the liver can cause chronic liver disease, cirrhosis, and eventually lead to the development of hepatocellular carcinoma. Studies have shown that individuals with hemochromatosis have a 20- to 200-fold increased risk of liver cancer compared to the general population.
