Anesthesia: The patient is put under general anesthesia. Incision: A surgical incision is made in the abdomen. Removal: The entire colon is carefully removed. Reconnection: The small intestine is either connected to the rectum (ileorectal anastomosis) or an external opening (ileostomy) is created.
