DSBs are a double-edged sword in the context of cancer. On one hand, they are essential for normal cellular processes like meiosis and immune system development. On the other hand, if not properly repaired, DSBs can lead to mutations, chromosomal translocations, and other genetic abnormalities that drive cancer development.
