Telomerase is an enzyme that adds repetitive nucleotide sequences to the ends of telomeres, effectively rebuilding them and allowing cells to evade the normal limits of division. In most somatic cells, telomerase activity is absent or very low, but in the majority of cancer cells, telomerase activation is a key mechanism for achieving immortality. This enzyme thus becomes a crucial target for potential cancer therapies.
