A total mastectomy may be recommended in several scenarios, including:
- Presence of large or aggressive tumors that cannot be treated with a lumpectomy. - Multiple areas of cancer in the same breast, known as multicentric breast cancer. - Patients with a high genetic risk of breast cancer, such as those with BRCA1 or BRCA2 mutations. - Cases where previous radiation therapy has failed, or radiation is not an option.
