Stem cell transplants are often utilized in the treatment of certain types of cancer, particularly leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. These cancers directly affect the bone marrow and blood cells. High doses of chemotherapy and radiation, which are necessary to kill cancer cells, can also destroy healthy bone marrow. A stem cell transplant helps to replenish the bone marrow, enabling the body to recover and produce new, healthy cells.
